SK Hynix Shatters Foreign U.S. IPO Record as AI Boom Fuels Expansion

SK Hynix, South Korea’s leading memory chip manufacturer, has completed the largest U.S. initial public offering ever by a foreign company, raising $26.5 billion (KRW 40 trillion) as investor enthusiasm for AI infrastructure continues to surge.

The company sold 177.9 million American depositary shares (ADRs) at $149 each, allowing U.S. investors to buy shares at roughly one-tenth the price of a standard share listed in Seoul. The IPO surpassed Alibaba’s record-setting $25 billion U.S. listing in 2014.

SK Hynix began trading on the Nasdaq on July 10 under the temporary ticker SKHYV, with the permanent ticker SKHY taking effect on July 13. Investor demand proved exceptionally strong, with shares opening about 14% above the IPO price and continuing to rise during early trading. Reports indicated the offering was oversubscribed by more than seven times, despite pricing at a 2.7% premium to the company’s recent average share price in Seoul.

The company is the world’s leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component used in AI accelerators, with Nvidia relying on SK Hynix as one of its primary HBM suppliers. As demand for AI computing continues to grow rapidly, the company has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI hardware boom.
