The past week saw an escalation in the “free drinks war” between delivery giants Alibaba and Meituan, part of their broader price competition. Rider Xie Yu noted a spike in orders, with nearly 100 in a day, double his average, due to free drinks and discounted meals. He also observed more orders from Alibaba’s Taobao recently, versus prior dominance by Meituan. Alibaba started with 18.8-yuan daily vouchers a week ago, then upgraded to 1 million free milk teas daily from Thursday to Sunday.
