China Holds Exhibition Highlighting Repin’s “Russianness”

An exhibition of works by Ilya Repin, a realist painter at the center of Russia-Ukraine’s culture war, has opened in Beijing as part of China-Russia cultural exchanges. On display at the National Museum of China are 48 oil paintings and 44 sketches by the 19th-century artist. Titled “Ilya Repin: Encyclopedia of Russian Life,” it runs until mid-January, part of 2024-25 Sino-Russian Culture Years marking 75 years of diplomatic ties. Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery emphasizes his “Russianness,” but Ukraine, his birthplace, claims him as its cultural heritage amid the war.
