Cecilia Cheung Says Former Agent Defrauded Her and Applied Improper Pressure

Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung has accused her former agent, Samuel Yu Yuk-hing, of exerting improper pressure, forging documents, and defrauding her of 8 million yuan (US$1.13 million). Cheung, now 45, testified in the High Court on Friday as she defended herself against Yu’s allegation that she broke a long-standing agreement to appear in four films between 2011 and 2019 for Asia Entertainment Group (AEG), a company that has since been liquidated.
Yu, who described himself as Cheung’s “god-grandfather,” claimed the actress became ungrateful after 2014 and failed to uphold a personal contract he said was independent of AEG. He argued that because the contract was supposedly signed directly with him rather than the company, Cheung remained bound to the deal even after AEG shut down in 2013. Yu further insisted he had offered Cheung a HK$40 million package in 2011 to help her resolve urgent financial troubles.
Cheung admitted she had sought Yu’s assistance at the time because she needed HK$40 million to complete a HK$128 million property purchase at Century Tower. However, she maintained that the authentic agreement bore her fingerprint, while the version Yu submitted did not — supporting her defence team’s accusation that Yu forged the document. She also said the two additional films mentioned in a separate agreement were never produced, meaning she could not have breached that contract.
Cheung accused Yu of manipulating her career decisions, claiming he threatened to spread false rumours if she refused to cooperate with his projects. She further alleged that Yu cheated her in 2014 when she agreed to appear on the mainland reality show Muse Dress. According to Cheung, Yu told her she would be paid 7 million yuan, but her assistant later learned the broadcaster had actually offered 15 million yuan. When questioned, Yu allegedly claimed he urgently needed the extra money for cancer treatment — a statement Cheung said was untrue.
Fearful of losing work, Cheung said she stayed silent at the time. In July 2014, she instructed lawyers to send AEG a notice expressing her intention to terminate the contract but deliberately softened the wording to avoid provoking Yu.
Cheung will continue giving evidence on Monday. A major star since her breakout in King of Comedy (1999), she later won Best Actress at the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards for Lost in Time.
