China’s Hidden Bitcoin Mining Revival

Bitcoin mining is quietly returning to China despite the 2021 ban. Individual and corporate miners are tapping cheap electricity and the rapid expansion of data centres in energy-rich regions such as Xinjiang. Once the world’s top mining hub, China’s market share had dropped to zero after the crackdown, but it has now rebounded to about 14 per cent, according to Hashrate Index. Miners say excess power in provinces like Xinjiang is being channelled into crypto mining, with new projects under construction. The revival coincides with bitcoin’s surge to record highs in October, boosted by pro-crypto policies in the US and rising distrust in the dollar. Industry leaders view China’s renewed activity as a major signal for global markets, even though Beijing has not officially eased restrictions.
