Crypto Hacks Hit Record High in 2025 with $2.7 Billion Stolen

Cybercriminals stole a record $2.7 billion in cryptocurrency in 2025, according to data from multiple blockchain-monitoring firms. The largest incident was a $1.4 billion hack of Dubai-based exchange Bybit, which authorities and analysts linked to North Korean state-sponsored hackers. It was the biggest crypto theft ever and among the largest financial heists in history. Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and De.Fi all reported similar totals, while Chainalysis also tracked an additional $700,000 stolen from individual wallets. North Korean hackers alone accounted for at least $2 billion this year and an estimated $6 billion since 2017, often funding the country’s nuclear program. Other major attacks hit platforms like Cetus, Balancer, and Phemex. Crypto thefts continue to rise, up from $2.2 billion in 2024 and $2 billion in 2023.
