China-founded AI agent start-up Manus has been acquired by US tech giant Meta Platforms for billions of dollars, marking a major deal amid intensifying US-China competition in artificial intelligence. Founded in China and launched publicly in March, Manus quickly gained industry attention for its powerful AI-agent capabilities and its limited, invitation-only access model. The acquisition comes just nine months after launch, highlighting China’s continued strength in AI innovation despite US efforts to restrict Chinese access to advanced chips and funding. Under the agreement, Manus will integrate its technology into Meta’s platforms while continuing operations from Singapore, where it relocated in July to reduce geopolitical risks.
