A former Google software engineer has been found guilty of stealing artificial intelligence trade secrets to benefit Chinese companies. Ding Linwei, a 38-year-old Chinese national, was convicted by a federal jury in San Francisco after an 11-day trial, according to the US Department of Justice. Prosecutors said Ding secretly worked for two China-based firms while employed at Google and stole thousands of pages of confidential AI-related documents. He was convicted on seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of theft of trade secrets. Each espionage charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a US$5 million fine, highlighting Washington’s tough stance on protecting sensitive technology.
