EU Orders TikTok to Rein in Addictive Design
The European Commission has accused TikTok of deliberately designing addictive features, including infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and a powerful recommendation engine. In preliminary findings under the EU’s Digital Services Act, regulators said TikTok failed to properly assess how these design choices could harm users’ well-being, especially minors and vulnerable adults. The Commission cited signs of compulsive use, such as excessive night-time activity and frequent app openings, and argued that constant content “rewards” push users into an autopilot scrolling mode. It urged TikTok to overhaul its interface, add effective screen-time breaks, and reform recommendations. TikTok rejected the claims, calling them unfounded.
