NASA Lets Astronauts Take Smartphones to the Moon

NASA astronauts will be allowed to bring personal smartphones into space for the first time, starting with the upcoming Crew-12 and Artemis II missions. Crew-12 will head to the International Space Station soon, while Artemis II — humanity’s first crewed lunar flyby since the 1960s — is now scheduled for March. NASA says modern iPhones and Android devices will help astronauts capture spontaneous photos and videos to share with their families and the public. Administrator Jared Isaacman said the move also reflects NASA’s effort to speed up internal processes and qualify modern hardware faster. Compared with older Nikon cameras and GoPros, smartphones could make these missions NASA’s most vividly documented yet.
