EU Urges TikTok to Limit Addictive Features
The European Commission has found that TikTok’s design may breach the Digital Services Act, citing addictive elements like infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and personalized recommendations. These features encourage continuous scrolling, risk harming minors and vulnerable adults, and weaken self-control, the Commission says. TikTok’s current safeguards, such as screen time tools and parental controls, are deemed insufficient. Proposed changes include limiting infinite scrolling, adding effective screen time breaks, and adjusting recommendation algorithms. TikTok can respond to the preliminary findings. If confirmed, the platform could face fines of up to 6% of global annual revenue.
