China Warns of Security Risks as OpenClaw Adoption Surges
China’s cybersecurity authorities have issued a second warning about potential security and data risks associated with the rapidly growing use of OpenClaw, an artificial intelligence agent that has been widely adopted by local governments and technology firms across the country.
The warning came from the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China (CNCERT), a cybersecurity technical platform that released a notice on its WeChat account highlighting serious vulnerabilities linked to improper installation and use of the software. Despite the concerns, many organisations in China have rushed to deploy OpenClaw amid a nationwide wave of enthusiasm for AI agents.

Developed by Austrian software engineer Peter Steinberger and released late last year, OpenClaw has quickly gained global attention for its ability to autonomously perform digital tasks on behalf of users. The agent can organise and respond to emails, draft work reports and prepare presentation slides, significantly boosting productivity.
However, CNCERT warned that these powerful capabilities also introduce new security challenges. Because OpenClaw operates with high-level system permissions to complete tasks independently, it can expose users and organisations to greater cybersecurity risks if not configured correctly.
