GitLab Restructures for the AI Era

GitLab is cutting about 14% of its workforce, or roughly 350 employees, as part of a restructuring plan focused on supporting growing AI-driven workloads. The company is exiting 22 countries, reducing management layers, and investing heavily in infrastructure and research. CEO Bill Staples said AI agents are creating traffic at a scale that traditional developer platforms were not built to handle. GitLab is rebuilding parts of its system, developing AI-optimized APIs, and creating tools that help AI agents and developers work together. Despite the layoffs, GitLab reported strong financial results, with first-quarter revenue rising 23% year over year to $264 million.
