Malaysia has revised public university admissions rules, allowing students from Chinese independent secondary schools to apply through approved pathways using the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC). The policy, announced on May 15, also includes students from other non-mainstream institutions such as Arabic schools, private institutes and tahfiz religious schools. Applicants must still meet national requirements, including passing Malay language and history in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM). The change has revived a long-running debate over how much Malaysia’s public education system should recognize and support Chinese-language schooling while balancing national identity and multicultural traditions.
