DeepSeek has completed its first external fundraising round, raising about 50 billion yuan and reaching a valuation of roughly 400 billion yuan (US$59.2 billion). The deal makes it one of China’s most valuable AI start-ups. Founder and CEO Liang Wenfeng personally invested around 20 billion yuan, nearly half of the total funding, ensuring he retains strong control despite bringing in outside investors. Liang emphasized that DeepSeek remains focused on achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), telling investors that the company’s goal is to enhance AI intelligence rather than pursue unrelated businesses. The funding is expected to strengthen DeepSeek’s position as competition in China’s AI sector intensifies.
