Big Fund Strengthens Hold in SMIC Through Record Buyout
大基金通过创纪录收购强化对中芯国际影响力
China’s state-backed Big Fund has become the third-largest shareholder of SMIC after the chipmaker completed a record 40.6 billion yuan (US$6 billion) acquisition on Shanghai’s Star Market. SMIC issued 547 million shares to buy a 49% stake in its Beijing subsidiary, Semiconductor Manufacturing North China (SMNC), from five shareholders, including the Big Fund. The company said the deal will improve asset quality, strengthen business synergies, and support long-term growth. Analysts said the acquisition helps ease SMIC’s capacity constraints while turning outside investor interests into strategic advantages. The move highlights Beijing’s continued use of the Big Fund to support semiconductor expansion and boost China’s chip self-sufficiency.
