TikTok is laying off 250 employees and shutting down its Nashville office, which was home to part of the company’s content-moderation team. The move was first reported by The New York Times.
Zanna Crowley, a spokesperson for TikTok’s USDS Joint Venture, confirmed the layoffs and office closure. She said the decision is intended to streamline operations and better organize teams for long-term growth.
TikTok said it remains committed to providing a safe and positive experience for its 200 million U.S. users, who use the platform to create, discover and connect with content they enjoy.
The layoffs come as social media companies increasingly turn to artificial intelligence to detect and remove violent, explicit and other harmful content. Greater use of AI could reduce the need for large teams of human content moderators, although human oversight remains important for handling complex cases.
TikTok leased the Nashville office in 2024. The location is scheduled to close on October 5.
