US Retail Sales Jump 1.2% in August, Beating Forecasts

US retail sales rebounded strongly in August, rising 1.2 percent from the previous month to 773.9 billion dollars, the Commerce Department said on September 16. The gain was well above the 0.8 percent increase economists expected and marked the strongest monthly rise in five months, after July’s decline was revised to 0.5 percent. Twelve of thirteen retail categories posted increases, led by online shopping, restaurants, furniture and clothing. Compared with a year earlier, retail sales were up 6 percent. The resilient consumer spending suggests Americans are still spending despite higher prices and borrowing costs, and gives the Federal Reserve room to keep fighting inflation.
