US Inflation Ticks Up in August, Fueling Bets on a Fed Rate Hike

Consumer prices in the United States rose 0.4 percent in August, the biggest monthly gain in three months, as gasoline prices rebounded. The Labor Department said Friday that inflation stood at 3.4 percent from a year earlier, unchanged from July. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, climbed 0.3 percent month over month, slightly above forecasts, though its yearly rate eased to 2.4 percent. The data arrived just days before the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting on September 15-16. Traders raised the odds of a quarter-point rate hike to around 71 percent, after Wall Street’s four-day losing streak and the highest 30-year Treasury yields since 2007.
