Fed Expected to Hold Rates in October as Inflation Picks Up to 3.7 Percent
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged when it concludes its meeting this week, after inflation picked up more than expected in September. Government data showed the consumer price index rose 3.7 percent in September from a year earlier, up from 3.4 percent in August, while core inflation climbed to 2.6 percent, the highest since June. Futures markets put the chance of a hold at about 90 percent, but traders see a growing probability of a quarter-point hike in December. The Fed raised rates to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent in September, its latest move to cool price pressures, and officials have signaled they will keep policy tight until inflation durably returns to target.
