Tesla’s Third-Quarter Profit Falls 43 Percent as AI Costs Surge

Tesla reported third-quarter revenue of 28 billion dollars, roughly flat from a year earlier, but net income plunged 43 percent to 787 million dollars as spending on AI and robotics surged. Operating income fell 56 percent to 718 million dollars, and the operating margin shrank to 2.6 percent from 5.8 percent a year earlier, weighed down by research and development costs that jumped 69 percent to 2.76 billion dollars. The company delivered 486,532 vehicles during the quarter, slightly above market expectations. Auto gross margin excluding credits recovered to above 18 percent, while the energy storage business saw gross margin jump to 33 percent. Tesla also said its Cybercab robotaxi rides have begun, as it pushes deeper into autonomous driving.
