China’s Manufacturing Slows Ahead of Lunar New Year
China’s manufacturing sector unexpectedly shrank in January, with the official purchasing managers’ index falling to 49.1—the first contraction since September. A reading below 50 signals a slowdown. The National Bureau of Statistics attributed the decline to the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, which sees millions of workers returning home.
