EU Accuses AliExpress of Systemic Failure on Illegal Goods, Warns of Fines

The European Commission has accused AliExpress of a “systemic failure” to prevent illegal and dangerous goods on its platform, citing insufficient action against counterfeit clothes and unsafe kids’ toys. EU regulators said the Alibaba-owned firm, with 104 million monthly EU users, lacked proper content moderation. While preliminary findings await the company’s response, fines of up to 6% of global turnover could follow under the DSA. AliExpress has pledged to tackle “hidden links” to illegal products and improve transparency, with commitments deemed legally binding. The probe under the DSA targets major platforms, and AliExpress said it’s cooperating to meet consumer protection standards.
