Canon Shuts Zhongshan Printer Plant but Stays Optimistic on China Market

Canon has closed its Zhongshan laser printer plant amid a prolonged global market downturn and shrinking demand for office devices. The company said orders for the facility, once a key production base established in 2001, dropped sharply as China’s printer market also contracted. Analysts note that fast-rising domestic printer brands, shifting consumer habits, and a growing home-printing market have intensified competition, challenging traditional foreign players.Despite the shutdown, Canon stressed that its other China operations remain normal and that it remains confident in the country’s long-term growth potential. The firm plans to deepen localization, advance R&D and tap opportunities in imaging, network cameras and medical devices. Canon also pledged to follow regulations and support job placement for affected workers.
