Lexus Breaks Ground on Shanghai EV Plant, Aims for 2027 Production
Lexus has started constructing an EV plant in Shanghai’s Jinshan district, set to complete in August 2026 and produce 100,000 vehicles annually from 2027. As Toyota‘s premium brand, it aims to seize a share in China‘s competitive EV market. The project makes Lexus the second foreign automaker after Tesla to own a wholly-owned factory in China, following China’s relaxed foreign equity rules. The plant will manufacture Lexus BEVs for domestic and global markets, with an initial 1,000 jobs. In April, Lexus acquired 1.13 million sq.m of land for the project, which includes NEV and battery manufacturing.
