Netflix has announced a landmark $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros., including HBO Max and HBO Studios, marking one of Hollywood’s largest mergers. The acquisition will greatly expand Netflix’s content library, adding major franchises like DC Comics, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. Netflix currently has over 300 million subscribers, while HBO Max and Discovery+ together hold around 128 million. Netflix’s $72 billion cash-and-stock investment surpasses Warner Bros.’ $60 billion market value, highlighting its aggressive push for dominance. However, the merger faces significant antitrust scrutiny. U.S. senators have warned that the deal could appear politically influenced, and anonymous industry groups have urged Congress to oppose it. Warner Bros. Discovery, weighed down by debt, put itself up for sale in October. The acquisition is expected to close in late 2026 after Warner Bros. separates from Discovery Global.
