U.S. Renews Chip Equipment Access for TSMC’s China Operations

The U.S. government has granted Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) an annual licence allowing it to import U.S.-made chipmaking equipment into its Nanjing plant in China. TSMC said the approval will ensure uninterrupted factory operations and stable product deliveries. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix of South Korea have also received similar licences.Previously, these companies operated under special exemptions, known as validated end-user status, from U.S. export restrictions aimed at limiting China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology. Those exemptions expired on December 31, requiring firms to apply for export licences for 2026.TSMC said the licence allows U.S. export-controlled items to be supplied without individual vendor approvals. The Nanjing facility mainly produces 16-nanometre and other mature-node chips and contributed about 2.4% of TSMC’s revenue in 2024.
