ByteDance Plans Massive AI Chip Spending as Demand Explodes
ByteDance plans to spend about 100 billion yuan (US$14 billion) on Nvidia artificial intelligence chips in 2026, up from roughly 85 billion yuan in 2025, according to sources. The investment depends on whether Nvidia is permitted to sell its H200 graphics processing units in China. The move is part of ByteDance’s ambitious AI capital spending plan, as demand for computing power surges. Valued at around US$500 billion, the Beijing-based company has also built a sizeable in-house chip design team of about 1,000 staff. Its internal unit has taped out a processor with performance comparable to Nvidia’s China-focused H20 chip, but at a lower cost, reflecting broader efforts by Chinese firms to secure chip supply.
