China–Canada EV Tariff Deal Opens Door for Global Automakers
China and Canada have reached an electric vehicle tariff reduction deal, with early benefits expected for automakers already certified in North America. Tesla, along with Geely-controlled Volvo and Polestar, are seen as first movers, according to Bloomberg. Tesla previously shipped over 44,000 EVs to Canada in 2023 before 100% tariffs took effect. Under the new agreement, Transport Canada will certify new Chinese EVs within eight weeks, speeding market entry. Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese EVs annually at a 6.1% tariff. BYD, though currently small in Canada, is also expected to gain, especially in the affordable EV segment.
