Tencent Faces Market Jitters Over AI Lag
Tencent Holdings Ltd. shares have fallen nearly 11% this year, wiping out around US$173 billion since October, as investors worry it lags in China’s AI race. The company’s cautious approach focuses on integrating AI into WeChat and gaming, unlike Alibaba and ByteDance, which aggressively invest in AI products. Tencent plans a 1 billion yuan (US$145 million) Lunar New Year campaign promoting AI tools, raising profit concerns. Its AI app Yuanbao records 18.3 million daily users, far below ByteDance’s Doubao and Alibaba’s Qwen. Analysts note Tencent’s large user base could help it catch up, but sentiment remains cautious.
