Richard Liu Bets $700m on Affordable Yachts for Mass Market
Richard Liu Qiangdong, founder of JD.com, has invested $700 million to launch Sea Expandary, a new yacht brand aimed at making boating affordable. He envisions $15,000 yachts for working-class families, comparing the plan to how cars became mainstream. Sea Expandary signed agreements with Zhuhai and Shenzhen authorities to build manufacturing, R&D and service hubs in the Greater Bay Area, with headquarters in Shenzhen. The company has already secured overseas orders for five 72-metre superyachts and plans to build six marinas locally. Liu says the yachts will use new-energy technologies such as solar and wind power, alongside AI and robotics. He will not manage daily operations, focusing instead on JD.com.
