Five Nations Win Seats on UN Security Council

Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2027–2028. Kyrgyzstan will join the council for the first time. They will replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia on January 1, 2027. To win a seat, a country must receive support from two-thirds of UN members voting in the General Assembly. Four countries secured seats in the first round, while Kyrgyzstan defeated the Philippines after several voting rounds. The 15-member Security Council includes five permanent members and 10 rotating members. It is responsible for maintaining international peace and can impose sanctions or authorize military action.
