US business activity expanded at the fastest pace in more than five years in September, according to the S&P Global flash purchasing managers’ index released on September 23. The composite output index rose to 58.4 from 56.0 in August, the strongest reading since July 2021, while the services index climbed to 58.7, a nearly five-year high. The survey points to annualized economic growth of around 4 percent for the third quarter, with job gains also accelerating. However, companies reported a sharp rise in input costs, and selling prices increased at the fastest rate since last spring, adding to concerns about inflation. The strong data complicate the Federal Reserve’s path as it weighs further interest rate decisions.
