US Hiring Slows Sharply in September as Unemployment Ticks Up to 4.2%
US employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, far below the roughly 85,000 economists had expected, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent, the Labor Department reported on October 2. August’s gain was revised down to 133,000 from an initial 162,000, and the previous two months together were revised lower by 60,000 jobs. Average hourly earnings rose only 0.1 percent from August, the smallest increase since December. The weak report cooled expectations that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates again at its late-October meeting, with futures markets pricing a lower chance of a hike and Treasury yields sliding. The data point to a labor market that is cooling while inflation pressures remain, complicating the Fed’s path as it prepares for its next policy decision.
