Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has fined Google 403 million euros, or about 463 million dollars, for breaching European privacy rules in its processing of users’ location data. The regulator, which announced the decision on September 21, found that Google did not provide sufficient transparency about how it used location information in web and app activity and location history, and kept the data longer than allowed under the General Data Protection Regulation. The DPC also ordered Google to bring its processing into compliance within six months. It is one of the largest fines imposed on a US tech company by the Irish watchdog, after a record 1.2-billion-euro penalty on Facebook owner Meta in 2023. Google said it is reviewing the decision. The case is part of a broader European crackdown on how big technology companies handle personal data.
