Stability AI Pivots to AI Music with Backing from the Three Major Labels

Stability AI, the company best known for its Stable Diffusion image generator, is rebuilding itself around AI tools for music professionals, Napster co-founder Sean Parker told The Information, with the strategy reported on October 2. In late August, the company raised 76 million dollars from investors including Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music, with the three major labels also licensing their catalogs for training. Stability has since released three new audio models and AI music-editing software that can generate full instrumental tracks or short snippets from text prompts. Parker said an upcoming update will let users hum a melody or beatbox a drum pattern to guide the generation. Two years ago, Parker helped rescue the company with an 80-million-dollar investment after founder Emad Mostaque left. The pivot turns a former disruptor of the music industry into a licensed partner of the labels it once fought.
