At least 47 large artificial intelligence data center projects in the United States have been delayed, withdrawn or blocked so far this year, according to a Financial Times investigation published on October 18, citing data from regulatory intelligence firm RegLayer. The figure is described as a conservative estimate covering only the biggest sites. The report found that more than 1,000 US communities have tried to impose moratoriums on data center construction, while power shortages, permitting hurdles and higher borrowing costs are squeezing developers. The setbacks are raising questions about America’s 10-trillion-dollar AI infrastructure buildout, with some bankers estimating that only about 35 percent of planned capacity will be realized.
