German Energy Bills Surge as Berlin Gas Prices Jump 22 Percent

German households are facing sharply higher energy bills as natural gas prices in Berlin rose about 22 percent between February and September, according to the Household Energy Price Index for European Capitals. One Berlin family told Xinhua that its annual costs for electricity, heating and hot water have reached about 3,500 euros, or nearly 300 euros a month, and that heating bills, which are usually settled in arrears, are causing growing anxiety. Higher procurement costs, a higher carbon price and the effects of the war in the Middle East have pushed up gas prices, deepening Germany’s cost-of-living squeeze. The trend is adding pressure on consumers and raising concerns about the country’s economic outlook.
