Beijing Joins Other Chinese Cities in Banning Petrol Cars from Ride-Hailing Platforms
Beijing has banned new petrol cars from ride-hailing platforms since July 20, following similar moves by Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Xi’an (which accelerated its 2028 fuel car phase-out to June 2025). Previously, Beijing required petrol cars below National 6 emissions to exit; now, new fuel cars can’t enter. Some drivers got alerts to switch to green-plate vehicles. This trend, amid China’s booming NEV market (53.3% penetration in June), will speed up the industry’s electrification. Carmakers like Changan, with its swap-enabled Oshan 520, are focusing on this sector.
