Google Unveils Gemini Agent, a Universal AI Assistant for the Workplace

Google on October 8 launched the Gemini agent, a single artificial-intelligence assistant built for enterprise work, at its Gemini at Work 2026 conference. The company calls it a universal agent for work: users give it objectives rather than step-by-step instructions, and it answers questions, handles knowledge work, creates images and media, and writes and runs code, all from one prompt box. The tool integrates with Gmail, Docs, Drive and Sheets, as well as third-party apps such as Slack and Microsoft 365. Google also introduced a concept called Coworker Agent, in which specialized sub-agents collaborate on long, multi-day tasks. The launch intensifies Google’s rivalry with OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft in the fast-growing market for AI assistants inside companies.
