JD.com and Meituan Clash Over Alleged Delivery Rider Restrictions

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com accused Meituan of blocking part-time delivery riders from working across platforms, a tactic that had previously earned Meituan a hefty antitrust fine in 2021. JD, which launched its food delivery service in February, claimed some riders’ income dropped by up to 25% due to these practices. Although Meituan denied the accusations and countered that JD enforces similar restrictions on its riders, JD has yet to respond. This “pick one from two” strategy remains a hot issue in China’s gig economy, highlighting ongoing competition between the two tech giants.
