China Fines E-Commerce Platforms Over Food Safety Lapses
China’s top market regulator has fined seven major e-commerce and food delivery platforms over 3.6 billion yuan (US$527 million) after a nationwide investigation. Authorities found that companies, including Pinduoduo, Meituan, and JD.com, failed to verify vendor licences and allowed unregistered “ghost” food businesses to operate. Other penalized platforms include Taobao, Tmall, Douyin, and Taobao Shangou. The crackdown highlights growing concerns over food safety amid intense competition in China’s online retail and delivery sector, where platforms have been under pressure to expand rapidly, sometimes at the cost of proper oversight and regulatory compliance.
