A U.S. federal prosecutor charged a Google software engineer, Michele Spagnuolo, with insider trading after he allegedly earned over $1.2 million on prediction platform Polymarket using confidential company data. Prosecutors said Spagnuolo, known online as “AlphaRaccoon,” used internal Google Search information tied to the company’s 2025 “Year in Search” campaign to place high-value bets. Authorities claim he wagered more than $2.7 million based on unreleased search trend data. Polymarket said it cooperated with investigators, stressing that blockchain activity leaves transparent records. Google confirmed the employee has been placed on leave and said the alleged conduct violated company policy.
