India Expands Smartphone and Chip Incentives

India announced a ₹625 billion ($6.5 billion) smartphone incentive plan and added ₹1.28 trillion ($13.3 billion) for semiconductor development. The five-year program rewards smartphone makers for sales and local sourcing, while also supporting chip equipment, materials, and research. Apple, Samsung, and other brands are expected to benefit as India strengthens its electronics supply chain. Although China still leads global smartphone production, India hopes these policies will attract more suppliers, increase local value, create 60,000 jobs, and boost its share of global manufacturing.
