U.S. regulators are considering new safety rules to ensure drivers and passengers can escape vehicles during emergencies. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began the rule-making process after a petition raised concerns about Tesla’s electronic door handles. The agency said some vehicles may become difficult to open when electrical power fails. Tesla cars have manual emergency releases, but they are located inside the vehicle. The move follows an earlier NHTSA investigation into Tesla door handles after owners reported being unable to enter their cars. NHTSA stressed that starting the rule-making process does not guarantee new regulations. The agency will gather more data and public comments before deciding whether new safety standards are necessary.
