Samsung Warns AI-Driven Memory Shortage Could Last Until 2028
Samsung says the global shortage of RAM chips is expected to continue through 2027 and may not ease until at least 2028, as demand from the artificial intelligence industry continues to outpace supply.
During its second-quarter earnings call, the company said leading AI developers are already providing medium- and long-term demand forecasts to Samsung in an effort to secure future memory chip supplies. As one of the world’s largest memory manufacturers, producing about one-third of global output, Samsung is in a strong position to allocate production based on long-term commitments.

The company noted that growing demand allows it to prioritize customers willing to sign multi-year supply agreements. These contracts give Samsung greater confidence to expand production capacity and invest in new equipment without worrying about sudden demand drops, helping reduce the boom-and-bust cycles that have historically affected the memory chip industry.
The AI-driven surge in demand has also pushed memory chip prices higher. While this has boosted Samsung’s semiconductor business to record revenue in the second quarter, it has also increased manufacturing costs for its smartphone and television divisions, putting pressure on profits in those businesses.
