TikTok to Invest €1 Billion in Finnish Data Centre Amid Privacy Concerns
TikTok has confirmed plans to invest €1 billion (US$1.14 billion) in building its first European data centre in Finland, part of its ongoing efforts to address privacy and data security concerns from EU lawmakers.
This move follows growing scrutiny over ByteDance‘s ownership of TikTok and concerns that European user data could be accessed by the Chinese government. In response, TikTok launched “Project Clover” in 2023, a data security framework backed by a planned €12 billion investment over ten years, aiming to reassure regulators and build trust in its operations.
Finland, with its cool climate and low energy costs, has emerged as a strategic location for tech companies establishing data centres, making it an attractive destination for TikTok’s expansion.
