Major Automakers Recall Nearly 70,000 Cars in China Amid Safety Crackdown

BMW, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz are recalling nearly 70,000 vehicles in China due to potential safety risks, as Chinese regulators intensify oversight after a deadly accident involving a Xiaomi electric vehicle.
Starting June 25, BMW will recall 26,846 vehicles — including 80 imported units — due to a defective power connector that could trigger fire hazards, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
FAW Toyota, a joint venture between Toyota and China’s FAW Group, is recalling 10,892 vehicles, including 93 imports, over loose suspension bolts that may compromise driving stability. The recall began on Friday.
Mercedes-Benz also announced a recall of 31,874 vehicles, citing fire risks and air-conditioning system issues, particularly with the condensate drain line. Four of these are imported models. Additionally, British brand Genesis will recall 181 imported cars over dashboard defects.
This move marks a significant jump from last month’s recall of 7,200 vehicles across 11 brands. It reflects growing regulatory pressure on automakers following heightened safety concerns voiced during last month’s Shanghai Auto Show, where vehicle safety was a major focus.
The sweeping recall demonstrates China’s determination to tighten automotive safety standards and prevent future accidents as its EV and automotive sectors expand rapidly.
