Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million vehicles in China as part of a nationwide safety campaign targeting hidden emergency door releases. The recall is designed to help passengers escape more easily if electronic door systems fail during a crash or fire.

Tesla is among 11 automakers involved in the campaign. Nine manufacturers, including Tesla, will add warning labels to help occupants locate manual emergency door releases, while all 11 will provide software updates. Other affected brands include Xiaomi, Xpeng, Zeekr and Lynk & Co.

The issue has grown as automakers increasingly use electronic door latches instead of traditional mechanical handles. These systems offer convenience, allowing drivers to unlock cars with smartphones or NFC cards, but they can become unusable if a vehicle loses power after an accident. Although most cars have manual emergency releases, they are sometimes placed in difficult-to-find locations or hidden behind panels.

China began addressing the issue after a two-year review. In February, authorities announced that hidden, electronically operated exterior door handles would be banned from new vehicles starting in 2027. The latest recalls are part of a broader effort to improve emergency access and make manual releases easier for passengers to find.
